Here are some practical and important tips to observe and implement to prevent Swine Flu from effecting your Organization:
- Understand the risks and the ways in which swine flu is transmitted (droplets of infected mucous material spread through coughing and sneezing; touching yourself after contact with droplets) and communicate to employees
- Wash hands frequently for at least 15 to 20 seconds with soap and hot water, vigorously covering hands and fingers
- Dry hands with paper towel; use towel to turn off faucet and open restroom door.
- Use alcohol-based sanitizers on hands between washings.
- Avoid touching the eyes, nose, and mouth
- Use the elbow or an implement such as a pencil to push buttons on telephones, commonly used machines (copiers, faxes, registers), or elevators
- Position boxes of tissue and hand sanitizer dispensers around the workplace
- Make certain all trash receptacles for tissues and paper towels have liners and discard liners with trash
- Prohibit unwrapped food sources such as candy jars or open boxes of snacks
- Take standard sanitary precautions around areas where those who are known or suspected to have the swine flu have been (disinfecting door handles, mutually used office equipment, etc.), and wear latex, vinyl, or nitrile gloves when cleaning
- Communicate essential policies to employees (sick leave, telecommuting, employee assistance programs, etc.)
- Encourage employees to stay home when they or people in their family have flu-like symptom
